Since mitochondria are indeed an alien species biologically, I'm curious to see exactly which of their real-world aspects did L'Engle adapt to fit as fictional characteristics.

Er...they are universes of their own, inhabited by little weird spore beings who dance and sing and are At One With The Universe, except when evil strikes, at which time they become reckless and wild and ignore the good advice of people who have been transported into their own mitochondria by a singular-plural entity made up of eyes and wings.
That's what happens in mitochondria in the real world, right? You know about these things, right?
