Ok, that's a camping experience I would rate as approximately terrifying. Remind me never to camp in Florida. Not that I would do that anyway. The South has too many things that can kill you.

In New England, we've got mosquitos, and that's about it, and if you're smart about where you camp, they're only bothersome at dawn and dusk. There's a place we like to camp in northern New Hampshire that's on a peninsula on a lake -- woods all around, but water front on three sides. The breeze takes the bugs right out. Never seen any snakes there, and there's nothing bad in the water, either.

We camped quite a bit in Germany, too, and that was even better, because there were pretty much no bugs at all, of any sort. They don't even have screens on the windows over there. Open windows would sooner get a bird inside than a bug. I don't know what the birds live on. Worms, I guess.
