It's not random. The trick here is just to be methodical.

A bug in the *original* game, replicated here, causes you to be able to kill the dragon without even having the sword. However, you have to catch the dragon at the right moment, so it matters what you do with the dragon immediately beforehand.

The sticks don't do anything, so I clean up your inventory there. I changed this so that an annotation makes this clear.
