Not that I'm trying to be too picky, but if you want a strictly "canon" answer on any topic, citing the Peter Jackson films is a bad idea. At best, they were "inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien;" really, they had all the right names, and that was the end of it.
Don't get me wrong; they were perfectly enjoyable films. Just not much to do with the books.
