This practice is not uncommon, actually. My mother told me a story along these lines, too. It all boils down to essentially this: philosophy is a load of bull. Thank you.

(Actually I'm rather surprised "Why not?" wasn't the A+ answer -- answering a question with another question seems more true to the spirit of philosophy, and the two questions themselves are, in fact, the two philosophers seem to try to answer the most. "Because" is an answer that provides no new information, inspires no further thought, and implies that no further thinking needs to be or should be done. In the mindset of a philosophy professor, I would think that particular answer would mean an instant failing grade. Then again, I should remember what I just called philosophy and not worry about it.)
