I'm with you there--my food memory is directly linked to how much effort it takes to get the food on the table.

I made a complicated lasagne once that I bullied my family into eating for four days in a row because, dang it, if I invested all that time on it they can jolly well eat it and like it.

And the Thanksgiving dinner I slaved two solid days in the kitchen to make?--that ought to last at least a week and a half.
