I found a sort of attempt at an analysis of the move at the link below. I'm not certain how accurate his thoughts are, but they helped a little bit. I'm sure I'll watch it again (and maybe a third time) and form my own opinions.

One thing that confused me was the ending, until I figured out that both of the main characters had created temporal duplicates of themselves by travelling back multiple times and "replacing themselves" in the time stream.

Which of course doesn't make any sense unless you allow for paradoxes that don't effect your "current version."
