Elevator jokes are a whole catagory. They probably out-number elephant jokes. This one goes back to the 1930's:

Man to elevator operator: "How do you like your job?"
Elevator operator: "Oh, it has it's up's and downs."

You would know it was an old joke. Elevators don't have operators anymore.
