Awesome.
Much better than Clones, or Menace, I thought. For one thing, Lucas didn't write any horrible blocky lovey dovey romance lines into this one (for the most part). There are some lines where your first thought is... wow, that's corny, but I suppose since Star Wars is supposed to be based on saturday morning serials, when lines were all corny, and the people were stereotypes, then you can cut it some slack on that front.
And there is some great dialogue in this movie. "Truly uncivilized," Obi-Wan says, when forced to use a blaster, harking back to his original line about the lightsaber being a truly civilized weapon in A New Hope.
Yoda at one point gets called "My little green friend," but in a truly sinister and evil way, which gives you a clue who says it.
Some of the best parts don't even have dialogue. The last ten minutes, or so, told almost exclusively without dialogue is truly something that all Star Wars fans will love. And when Vader takes his first breaths with the mask on...
oh man.
The much hyped lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin (longest sword fight ever filmed, over 1000+ moves in the duel) was pretty impressive. Very fast moving, very well choreographed, and truly one of the highlights of the film, though the way it ended seemed to come a bit too quickly, especially since it's touted throughout the movie about how powerful Anakin is.
A few of the gripes I had about this movie, though, have to deal with geeky stuff like physics in outer space. Since there's no air, and no gravity, there should be no g-forces, yes Obi-Wan reacts to G-forces at one point. There is no air in space, so there should be no need to have drag fins on a pre-star destroyer star destroyer. I don't think gravity would slip around on a crashing starship, since, in space, where there is no gravity, the artificial gravity of the ship would keep your feet on the ground anyway. Also, droids getting pulled off of fighters because of the speed the fighter is traveling has no bearing when there's no air to drag the droid off.
But that's all pretty minor, and in the first half hour or so, and the rest of the movie clicks along pretty well. Though it is pretty jumpy. It's not told in scenes, it's told mostly in scenelettes. Short little two or three minute scenes, and then it jumps to something else, which got kind of annoying after a while, but still, it worked.
Very good movie. I enjoyed it.
4/5 Stars, but only because I'm a geek.
