That's all well and good for practical matters like farming, where all you really need to know is whether the sun's out and what season is a-comin'. But much of our history, including many innovations throughout history, is shaped by such non-practical (not to say "impractical") concerns as religion.
Time of day was important to a culture that had to pray 3 times a day + bonus prayers on holidays, because they had to make sure they were saying the right prayers at the right times.
