Then my problem was staring down at the corner of the hood and not looking where I was going. My mom absolutely refused to drive with me after the first couple of times. She hasn't let me drive her anywhere since I caught her van's brakes on fire. X-P >
My trick for staying centered was lining up the car so that I was directly behind the driver of the car in front of me. If there was no car in front of me, not hitting the cars on either side was a workable system too.
I use a similar trick for parallel parking. I judge closeness to the curb based on the next car's closeness and how it lines up with mine, adjusting for the difference between the widths of the cars.
