The area you speak of is only a "bonus" for getting experience and dosh by fighting tough monsters. It isn't critical to advancing the game.
Yes, you need a key to the door. Level 4, despite its twisty-turny shape, is fairly linear. Follow it to the end and you'll find what you need.
