MR- What's the point of this bit? (possible small spoilers)

I'm a bit stuck on this game. I've been wondering around the same areas for hours now, and I'm not really getting anywhere. I just wanted to check if this area is at all useful. It seems like it should be, but I can't find anything out of it.

The area is on level 4, and it is got to from the staircase on level 3 that colapses when you go down it. The area is 8 pretty tough enemies followed by 4 pools of water.

I've got through the area twice, and got my whole party killed twice, but there never seems to be anything down there that actually advances the game. Is this a useless area, or am I missing something?

If this is not where I need to be, can someone give me any hints to get further? I have the proper authorization and the pass stone, and I think I need a key to get through the door in level 4.
