Also when at the general store I did give him a diamond which he took, gave me nothing and then asked for another gold piece which I gave him (I don't remember what he gave me then.)

hmm. let's see. "waiting" is the appropriate response with the cat, after you've fed the bunny. maybe you didn't wait long enough ?
You have what you need to get some other items, just need to do some more trading. In general, gold should go to the soothsayer, other items trade at the store. hope this helps !
