I went out on the roof last night; I don't remember what time it was but there was a tiny chunk missing. Later I went out again and it appeared to be gone, but I couldn't tell for certain since a thick cloud cover had obscured the moony portion of the sky. > > We had broken clouds which hid it briefly a few times but I got a good look at the first bite and later watched it become total. As advertised, it turned brick red. It stayed total until I got sleepy and went to bed. I have seen dozens of eclipses in my time, including several total ones.
We had a stunningly clear night, and in my time zone, the eclipse was starting just after 7:00 pm. My parents were in town, and we went for dinner at about 7:30, and the moon was about one fifth obscured at that point. When we finished dinner at about 9:00, the moon was fully shadowed but still clearly visible from the refracted light from the earth's atmosphere as promised -- but not particularly red. That was somewhat disappointing. I assume that all the light pollution from my city of almost a million washed out the red color, but I honestly don't know.
Because of the lack of red, I figure my favorite part was watching the curved shadow of the earth gradually cover the moon. That rocked.
