French Translation (was "Say what??? Horses, maybe?")

The fact that it translates word for word leads me to believe that it is the result of a native English speaker translating words one at a time with a French-English dictionary. It's also rare that a common phrase in any language has a word-for-word counterpart in another language, so if this is an example of that, it would be a rare one.

Perhaps a native speaker of French could fill us in on how comprehensible the phrase actually is in French?
