Sounds like the classic "Gift of the Maji" story. I recently saw a Twilight Zone episode that did a take on that theme. An astronaut was going for a forty-year space trip in suspended animation, and right before he leaves he falls in love and has to deal with all the angst of knowing that when he returns his love will be a doddering old lady. So he turns off his suspended animation and spends forty years in space alone, only to return and discover that his lady friend had herself put in suspended animation after he left so that they could pick up where they'd left off...
