For example, family.org has a section called "Plugged In" that reviews music, television, and movies. Most of the movies are reviewed by giving a summary and then breaking things down into categories. It's intended to be used, I think, for parents trying to see if they want to take their children to see something, but I myself find it quite useful.
Granted, the information may be out there, but it's not as accessible as the rating information that you see every time a movie trailer is flashed in your face. Also, I'm pretty sure some theaters use the actual ratings to determine who can buy a ticket.
Why have a rating system in place at all, if it provides little useful information and better information is available elsewhere?
