The federal government takes a different view on this one: if you're under 25, they factor in your parents' income into their criteria of "expected family contribution" when calculating how much aid you're eligible for. Getting subsidized federal loans (much easier to qualify for than need-based grants) are a really good deal, but it requires you tell the government how much money your family has.

If your family *won't* tell you how much money they have, I'm not sure what happens. I'm sure it's a hassle.
