Apply anyway. There is no reason your parents must disclose their financial status to you. Mine didn't to me. "None of your business." My parents paid for everything they thought I needed. A lot of it I didn't need, but they bought it anyway. They would not pay for anything they thought I didn't need. Once they had decided, they never changed their minds. "Children need consistency." I applied for loans for what I really needed. It was much more difficult without any info on their finances. Not impossible.
They only paid for what they thought I needed. Not for anything I wanted. I got a job for that. Minimum wage, and a lot of competiton for that wage. I didn't tell them about the job, they were not paying lots of money for me be there and earn so little while not studying.
Choose a school wisely. Your criteria are different. Find out the cost of living in the school area. I went to school where the cost of living was much higher than most students could earn. If they were lucky to get job waiting tables at a place where the tips were good, they still had to reduce their courseload drastically and take longer. So they did.
My sister went to college where the cost of living was lower. She had her own room in a four bedroom house. I shared a room in a two bedroom apartment. My share of the appartment rent was the same as the entire rent for her house. Minimum wage was the same in each town. (Our state currently has higher minimum wage than many others)
