One way of looking at that is:
If you can't help getting old, you might as well profit from it. My wife and I are constantly saying, "Can we get a senior discount?" It's astounding how often that saves an extra 10 or 20 percent. Sometimes a lot more.

We recently got a couple of bucks off tickets to the Cumberland County playhouse. Fast food places almost always offer old folks a savings and when we go in for a new computer this week, we will probalby try for one there. As for airplane tickets, we already get fantastic savings as the parents of an airline employee so we don't need one there.

Hotels will give at least a 10% discount for almost any reason you can think up, but sometimes balk at multiple discounts. Car rental companies are more likely to to upgrade seniors. We drove a rented Nissan Altima across country after 9-11 for the price of a sub compact. It was a great car.

Lots of supermarkets have a "senior day" and will take off 10% or more on your total bill. Add that to coupon savings and some food bills are less than half price.

So I say more power to your uncle. As a retired doctor, he may have more money than a retired teacher and a retired secretary, but I think he has earned a few discounts.
