Both were in the top of their class (I was in the top 100 of my class.)and without consulting each other, both have opted to go to Maryville College. Both are in pre-med and will likely transfer to the University of Tennessee in a couple of years.

He served his time and then went back to school and finished his education. My father got called up for the 2nd World War and chose to go into the marines and went to a lttle place called Iwo Jima. My son went into the Navy of his own choice during the Vietnam War and served 4 years on a submarine. WHen he came home he finished his last two years in school. I'm very proud of them all.

Yes, I'm proud of them too. I didn't exactly succeed in staying out of the Army. I got a college deferrment by going into ROTC. That allowed me to finish my education and go into the Army as an officer.

But it was between wars and there are not very many heros in peacetime. Without a war, the military shifts it's direction. The brass seemed to be mostly interested in justifying their own existance. One of them did so by having little red and gold signs made up that said, "Artillery - the greatest killer on the battlefield." He had them posted them all over the place. There was one in every room. I got a little sick every time I saw one.

Then I would go out the the artillery range and call in 105mm shells filled with TNT on an old car body or some such target. Thank goodness I was never called on to do that to people. My time in the Army was miserable, but it could have been worse.

PS - I typed this out once before, but my computer ate it. I hope it doesn't show up twice.
