It's possible that common verbs are irregular in a lot of languages. Maybe it's because they were "invented" before someone decided to set down grammatical rules, and then the only way to create less common verbs was to have conjugation rules for them. That's certainly consistent with the bulk of my experience. The verb "etre" (to be) in French is irregular, and the Portuguese "ser" and "estar" seem to be versions of two irregular forms of "etre".

But in Hebrew, I don't think there are any other irregular verbs. Just "to be". And it's not irregular in past, future or imperative tenses. It just plain doesn't exist in the present tense.

Weird.
