> It's that time again. Here are the highlights of this summer's movie season and some initial thoughts. All of the projections here are subject to change; whatever I might anticipate or dread, I'm open-minded when I fire up a movie and start to watch it. Surprises happen.

> April 16 - Kill Bill, Vol. II

This, quite simply, is going to rule. It doesn't come out until next weekend over here, but I'll be there.

> May 7 - Van Helsing

If I remember, Van Helsing was a doctor, getting on in years, who once got caught up in a bit of bother with a vampire, when it moved in next door to him. The idea of him being a secret agent for the church, going to Transylvania to battle monsters sticks in my craw a bit. I don't have any plans to see this, especially as Kate Beckinsale seems to be CGI'd throughout the trailer. Didn't they have a real Kate Beckinsale knocking around the set?

> June 11 -- The Chronicles of Riddick

I'm a big fan of Pitch Black; I think it's the best Aliens rip-off yet. Also, it's interesting to see what Vin Diesel brings to screen writing: Dungeons and Dragons references. I'm looking forward to this.

> June 25 - Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Rocketeer meets War of the Worlds. How can this go wrong? It certainly looks beautiful, and Jude Law seems to be very good as Sky Captain.

Though I just might be rooting for the bad guys.

> July 7 - King Arthur

If this is as good as Excalibur, then I'll be impressed. I imagine I'll see it, but not with a huge amount of excitement.

> July 16 - I, Robot

So far as I can tell, there was no reference to Asimov until post production. Then someone said "Hey, this is kind of similar to Caves of Steel, except that robots break the First Law, and it's not a murder mystery, and there's no adverse public reaction to robots." I put this in the Van Helsing file. If Asimov was alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave.

> August 13 - Alien vs. Predator

So far there have been three comics, two cartoons and at least two computer games based on this. A film is long overdue. But by that standard, so is Batman vs Aliens. Though Batman vs Predator could work on screen...

I think this could well be good.
