The best thing going for the songs nominated this year, i think, is that they weren't the songs nominated for last year. Last year's song nom's just didn't deserve to be awarded. They weren't any good. Admittedly, i don't know any of the songs nominated this year, other than the Annie Lennox one from Return of the King, since that's about the only movie from the whole night that i'd actually seen (ok, that and Finding Nemo, i guess).
But as for that, i really liked the "character" feel of Gollum's song from one of the earlier movies, was it the first or the second? Pretty sure it was the second, the one from last year. But i guess that song was too much in keeping with movie making, not enough of a pop song on its own, to be awarded. Mleh.
Still, hurrah for the success of LOTR, if for no other reason than to keep Titanic from being remembered as one of the two most successful oscar winners of all time (Ok, so being one of the three best isn't really all that different).
