I think "hardly noticed" is not very accurate - this season, as I said elsewhere, the Cubs set a new attendence record. Since they are the bottom team in the league (Go team! Woo!), there must be another reason for this, and few would dispute that Sammy Sosa is that reason. Fans flocked to the game to watch his home run streak - currently 61, two ahead of Mark McGwire, with four regular-season games left to play.

He is a nice guy. I watched the game last year in which McGwire broke the record - amusingly enough, the Cards were playing the Cubs that game - and, afterwards, Sammy walked up to Mark McGwire and gave him a hug. Can you imagine that happening in, say, basketball? No - you'd see cursing and screaming and threats (especially considering how hard home runs are to get in basketball). It was really wonderful, and established Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire as gentlemen in my book. Another point - in the game yesterday, there was a long stretch of Sammy standing on first base. Mark is the Cards' first-baseman, and there were several shots of the two of them chatting amiably during the interval.

Nah - just that it doesn't take me very long to subvert anything to my cause. ;-}

Well, Mr. high-and-mighty, after your "Sammy who?" nonsense, I think you shouldn't be talking. ;-}
