I'm always relied on networking to land interviews at the places I've worked (from the fast-food jobs as a teenager to my current job of software engineer).
You may already know this, but for those who don't, one of the best ways to go about it is to make sure that you aren't just networking with people that quickly come to mind, such as immediate family and friends. Think of those people you see a little less frequently such as church members or people in any clubs or other groups you might belong to. Let it be known to everyone you know (without being overbearing about it of course) that you are looking for a new job and that if they know of any to contact you as soon as possible. Also Grish you could use (read: ask nicely for help from) Mrs. Grishny to get the word out, as I'm sure she'd be glad to help.
With networking you never really know who could help you and often (at least in my experience) a contact will be made through someone who's only a good acquaintance.
