I'm reasonably sure that the only reason Kevin Costner keeps getting starring roles in such films is because several directors formed a group one day and decided that the only way to keep Kevin Costner from directing more movies is to make sure he gets a starring role every now and again. The reason Sam Raimi is directing it is because they chose his name out of a hat for this one.
