I take great offense to that comment, though I suppose one is entitled to his or her opinion. The problem, I think, is that you didn't watch the grill cooks through the little window, where you would have seen the burgers being cooked. You see, White Castles are steam-grilled. This basically means that they cover the grill in water and minced onions and the steam from the grill, as well as the flavor of the onions, permeates the patty, which has 5 holes in it to ensure than it will be steamed quickly and thoroughly. Also, after the patties are laid out on the grill, the buns are then placed on the patties while they are cooking to steam and soften the bun, as well and to let the buns soak up the juices from the burger and onions. When the burger is done cooking the bottom portion of the bun is removed and placed underneath the burger, along with a fair amount of onions from the grill. Add a pickle and you've got yourself a "slider". On second thought, I think the pickle is cooked with the burger and bun as well. This whole process takes just a couple of minutes and they can make, if I remember correctly, around 30 or so at a time, depending on the size of the grill. And, of course, they can special order your burger without onions or pickle or adding extra or whatever.

All that was to say this: if you had taken a few seconds to watch the grill cook make a few burgers you would have known that they are covered in onions and could have asked that yours be grilled without the onions, which would have improved your experience, as you obviously don't care for onions or onion-flavored items. Not to mention, this would have cut down on the greasy/slimy factor. I am saddened that you didn't enjoy the White Castle experience. Although, I guess it isn't for everybody. Personally, I'd almost make the 15 or so hour drive it takes to get one if I had the time or the means.

There is also a slight variation on this concept which is popular in the Southern states. They are called Krystals. Much like White Castle, but with a dab of mustard on each one and some other interesting things on the menu, like mini-hotdogs and -corndogs. These are not quite on the same level, in my opinion, but also enjoyable.

That's funny. I have never been impressed with the fries. Try the chicken rings, though: ring shapes stamped out of a whole chicken breast, battered and deep fried. I happen to like them quite a bit.
