I don't remember exactly where it was, but I remember seeing an article somewhere about how in many older cultures, adulthood began as soon as a person reached puberty. The point of this observation was the notion that adolesence is a CONSTRUCTED condition as a result of how our society functions, and not something that "everyone" goes through.

I'm not sure how much weight this holds, but it helped me reach that level of cynicism to overcome what I thought was my own personal depression.
