Don's post about the accident reminded me a something that happened almost exactly a year ago. More than likely, I posted something about it here, but it's the kind of story that I like to tell again.
Jack Roush, about 60 years old, is a race car owner. He owns the team that fields cars for Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, and others in the NASCAR cup series. Jack is an airplane buff. Because he is wealthy, he owns and flys several airplanes. Last April, he clipped a powerline and landed upside-down in a pond. Injured, he was unable to get out. There was only one person nearby when it happened, and he was a paramedic who had trained in water rescue. He got Jack out, brought him to the bank, and soon had him in a hospital. He recovered nicely and is flying again.
But what are the odds of surviving that kind of an accident? Well, if survival depends on having a paramedic with the right training right there beside the pond, the odds are almost zero. Not many ponds have people like that stationed nearby. Jack knows he beat the odds, and says that makes every day all the more enjoyable.
I think I can understand that. I had a near miss in a car the other day. It couldn't compare with Jack's, but it was close enough to make me see the value of some extra days.
I think Ben Franklin is the one you said, "Don't waste time. Time is what life is made of." Naw, it couldn't have been Ben. He wouldn't have ended a sentence with a preposition. Howard
