  When I first read that, I immediately thought,  "but what about people whose lives hold no  pleasure?" Slaves, for example, or the  oppressed masses living under a totalitarian  regime of some kind... why do they continue  on, day in and day out,  their lives a drudgery?
  Then the possible answer occurred to me.  And it's the same answer essentially. They  look forward to something better. No matter  how small it is, they have a grain of hope that  one day, somehow, their lot will improve.
