When I first read that, I immediately thought,
"but what about people whose lives hold no
pleasure?" Slaves, for example, or the
oppressed masses living under a totalitarian
regime of some kind... why do they continue
on, day in and day out, their lives a drudgery?

Then the possible answer occurred to me.
And it's the same answer essentially. They
look forward to something better. No matter
how small it is, they have a grain of hope that
one day, somehow, their lot will improve.
