Part of the reward of having money is being able to buy things you want but do not need. And some people choose to buy SUVs.

The difference between SUVs and all those other things is the other things don't actively bother other people. SUVs on the road, on the other hand, do. They are hard to see around while driving and take up a lot of space in areas with limited parking. It's damned annoying that so many people drive them around here in Southern California where it doesn't snow.
