I'm a waitress who works in a family restaurant. People who think they're not in the presence of old ladies, children, ministers, etc, will swear loudly and enthusiastically as if they were they only people in the restaurant (many of them are really decent people and don't have a clue what they're doing). The parents next to them will dive for their kids' ears, glaring at me as if there's anything I can do about it. Then there are the people who go on and on about how the Old Country Buffet in Rockford (I work at one in Wisconsin) has been ruined by all the "[African-Americans]". That's when I tell them my adopted brother is African-American. Oh man, I wish I had a video camera for all the facial expressions I've witnessed.
Anyway, the point is, you don't always realize that you're in the presence of people who will be offended. Most people swear in front of me because I'm young and I don't wear a pocket protector and thick glasses. But I think it's extremely offensive, even though I don't always say so.
