Pears in the river

I saw some little green things floating down the Colorado River. I was standing on the balcony of a casino in Laughlin, Nevada, and just assumed that they were some kind of desert fruit that was falling off a tree somewhere. I also noticed a lot of cardboard boxes drifting by. Some were whole and some in pieces. A casino employee stopped by and said that bobbing for pears was part of the amusement in Laughlin. Kidding of course. Then he said there had been a truck wreck and some pears had fallen into the river.

I guess he didn't realize how serious it was, because when we strolled up the riverwalk we saw an entire trailer truck, terribly smashed and lying in the river bed. The trailer was broken open and pears were still floating out. I still don't know what happened to the driver, but he must have been badly injured or worse. Part of the bridge railing was gone, and we heard later that a car had been involved. The river is the state line between Arizona and Nevada, and the wreck was in Nevada by just a few meters.

We missed out on a river cruise, because the river had been shut off to lower the level so the truck could be removed. The current was slowed and a lot of river bottom was exposed. Water taxis were still running, but the river cruise is on a larger boat.

I don't know how much the story was reported in the media, but if you saw it, let me know about how the driver fared. I'm still a little worried about him.
