Question for Americans

I would like to hear from those of you who work in office-type jobs about what the usual dress code is. I will be working in the USA soonish, and although I am aware that it is a LOT less casual over there, I don't really know what this means in terms of actual clothing. The most formal-dress office job I've had, to date, basically meant I wasn't allowed to go barefoot.

So, what do women in U.S. office jobs wear? Makeup? Nylons? Skirt and jacket? Slacks and blouse? I have no idea, you see. I'm really, really hoping everybody doesn't say "nylons", because I have never owned any of those in my life and they seem like the stupidest item of clothing ever invented.
