> The first thing happened on Monday at work. I got into the lift lobby and called the lift, the guy just behind me also preesed the button which called the lift. Hmm, someone's in a hurry, thought I. The lift came, the doors opened and we got in. I was next to the floor buttons so I pressed for the third floor. I could see this other guy in the mirrored walls of the lift as he watched me press #3. He waited until I moved and then leaned over and pressed three again. By this time the doors had closed and the lift was moving. Pressing it again wasn't going to make it move any faster. He even lingered on it, making absolutely sure that that button knew it had been pressed.

Huh. I personally haven't been in many buildings that had more than one floor, and when I have, it wasn't often that I needed to or wanted to go to a floor other than the first. However, I pretty much know how to operate an elevator. I check if the direction I want has been selected and only push the button if it hasn't. If I get into an elevator with people in it, I check to see if the floor I'm going to has already been selected, and only push the button if it hasn't been.

However, the other day, I went to the courthouse to clear something up about jury duty and so mom could pay for taxes and tags. Once we were done with the jury duty thing, we wanted to go to the first floor. We figured that we could just go into any elevator and push 1, and expect it to go down. WRONG. It takes us to the Mezzanine floor. We got off (for some reason); nobody else got on. Clearly, no one had summoned the car, or if they had, it was a practical joke. It took a bit of convincing to get mom to believe that we were not where we wanted to be. Then we found out that our collector is in another castle -- er, building, so we went back to the elevator. If the elevator was not summoned to the Mezzanine floor, and I pushed the button for the first floor, why did it waste energy by taking us to the first floor?

Oddly enough, with all of the elevator use at conference, I did not observe any such problems.
