St. George's Day has absolutely no significance whatsoever in by far the greater part of the British population. Except for me, because I'm bouncing around saying "It's two days until my biiiiirthdaaaayyyy, hee hee hee..." The only sign that it's arrived is that churches sometimes fly a St. George's Cross (that's the red cross on a plain white background, if you're not hugely up on our myriad of pointless flags) and the fact that the government give out free book tokens because it also happens to be Shakespeare's birthday. So there we go. England's patron saint is almost forgotten, and is replaced by possibly the greatest English-language writer the world has ever seen.

The only non-commercial, fun holiday we have left is groundhog day. And recently, I have seen some groundhog day sales. Who in their right mind would go to a sale on Feb. 2? I plan to stay home and hibernate.
