Well, McAfee and Norton are the two big anti-virus software providers that I know of. I use McAfee at home and Norton at work. Both do a good job. I'd recommend either one.
One can keep his computer virus-free just by using good sense when downloading stuff and opening e-mails (I went five years with my first computer with no anti-virus software) but it's getting harder and harder as people with too much time on their hands create more and more devious virii. If you get a good anti-viral software package and update it regularly (a must), it can take care of the stuff you might miss.
I'm not sure about Norton, but the McAfee package I use only costs about $25 a year. I've had it for just over a year now, and I know that at least once it caught an infected file that slipped through my "good sense" filter and kept my machine from getting a virus. Definitely worth the money, if you ask me.
