I once opened a new Hotmail account, gave the address to nobody, and in no time at all, it had more than 200 spam messages in it. The only real solution is to use an e-mail address provided by your ISP, your school, etc, though I know that some free e-mail sites are better than others. (Rinkmail, for example, gives me about one piece of spam every few weeks, and even that has stopped lately.)

I have had good results using Yahoo's free webmail. Up until a few months ago, I had never received a single spam in over four years of use. This was with no filters turned on and with my email address openly displayed at several locations online and well-known to my friends. For some reason I got four or five spam mails at once, a few months ago, but that has stopped now.
