I don't remember much of grade 12 physics, which is where we learned about that resonance stuff. I think the gist of it was that everything naturally vibrates at its own frequency, and when you apply another vibration to that object with the same frequency and phase, you get constructive interference which augments the vibration. That's how they're able to shatter a wine glass with a high shrill note.
So, naturally, the Earth has a resonance frequency of its own. I guess when meditating, people can sort of "pick up" this frequency and then imitate it, which is about a low C sharp.
As for defaulting to a key, I personally have found that after listening to a song enough, whenever I start to hum it I'm in the correct key. If not, it's usually just random.
