I know a fellow who is named after his father, whose first and middle name is "Keith Ray," but instead of calling him Keith Jr., they called him by his middle name, Ray. I used to think that was weird, until I realized how many people there are that do that.
I'm named after my father too, but if I had gone by my middle name I'd have been confused with my cousin. And Wes would either be calling himself "The Other Wes" or "Jimmy of York." So they juveniled it and called me "Johnny" growing up. That really started to bug me when I got into high school and so I started insisting on being called "John" like my dad. It never really caught on at home, though. My mom would say John and we'd go "which one?" My sisters still call me Johnny. They just did it last night, and I glared at them.
My father-in-law is an interesting case. He doesn't have a middle name or initial, so he made one up. "K." I don't know what it's supposed to stand for. My wife teases him for it.
