I think you've found the "Defrost + Toast" setting, useful for items like frozen waffles. This setting renders your waffle edible after only one application, as contrasted with the multiple toasting-chamber dunkings that frozen waffles would require at a lower setting.
Sometimes they still burn, though, just to show you who's boss.
