I love this movie*. In fact, I like the whole sub-genre of prisoner-of-war movies: Stalag 13, Where Eagles Dare, The Hiding Place** (technically not POW, but close enough). I'm not sure what that says about me...O_o : "Likes to see innocent people put in difficult situations" (?) Maybe that is also why I like Hitchcock films, favorite among them Rear Window.
I also happen to like sports movies, another genre not mentioned. Rudy, Remember the Titans, A League of Their Own, Bingo Long's Traveling All Stars, to name a few. I do not care for Disney's idea of sports movies, though (Air Bud et al).
And then there's Victory, a POW/sports combo. Not a *great* movie, but an interesting variation. Koaladad & I saw it on our first date :-)

I think the book is better than the movie about 99% of the time. Exception: Dr. Zhivago. The music, the ice palace, the war, the field of flowers--all exceded my imagination.
