What about GNU (GNU Not Unix)? My guess is that the inventors were thinking of the animal name, since the "G" is silent in that case. So it makes sense that in the acronym, the G would stand for nothing.

Engineers and computer people have odd senses of humor and give things weird names. I mean, calling half a byte a "nibble". ***groan***
