Man, that sucks (about the auto-levelling). I figured that since I wouldn't need to rest at the inn, it would be level 0.

And yeah, I meant level 0, not level 1. That was my mistake.

I've got my strategy pretty clearly worked out, and I'll post it after I do it. :)

Although it's pretty tough levelling up in the early stages; one difficulty I didn't anticipate was paralyzation. Once you get paralyzed, it's back to town you go!
