High school social life always struck me as petty and superficial. I never really developed any desire to socialize with anybody in school, except for having the occasional friend, until I got to college, and even then I had to hunt to find social niches that didn't fixate on drinking and partying.
Heck, the place I'm going to college seems to have nothing *but* those sorts of social functions. Meaning that there is little drinking and partying, if any. I'm sure there is some, but not like any other schools. Which is one reason why I chose to go to Grove City. A free ride to Pitt would've been nice (and probably obtainable), but I hate the atmosphere I'm in now, and I can only imagine what a public university such as that would be like.

As such, "senior prom" carries the weight of prestige that seems more outlandish to pass up than the usual kind of high school social event. So that may be why people (of your generation or your parents'? I can't tell) think it odd that you exhibit no interest in it. Even so, you'd think "no, actually I'm not" would only evoke a raised eyebrow and not further protest.
The kids at school are usually rather surprised that I'm not going, but it's mostly the girls. Most guys who've asked me if I was going and found out that I wasn't didn't particularly seem to care all that much. But the girls seem to exhibit shock when they hear that I'm not going. So far, I'm the only person I've heard of who is not going to our Senior Prom. Out of a senior class numbering 250. I'm sure there's others, but I've heard of kids who I never thought would ever go to prom who are making plans to go. I haven't told my parents, but then, they haven't asked either. Although I figure my dad will probably understand my reasoning, and my mom may be a little miffed about it, but not too entirely upset.
