I hear constantly about lawsuits against big companies because of blacks being fired now. I doubt a good black actor would "slip through the cracks" simply for being black.

The topic of race came up and it was noted that because movie roles are usually written as white characters, it's often a fight for black actors and actresses to persuade the moviemakers to consider giving them the part. The lead role in Sister Act (played by Whoopi Goldberg) was written as a white character. Will Smith was turned down for a role in a movie based on a John Grisham novel when the author strongly hinted that he didn't want the character's race to change.

I know a black actor on a show with an ensemble cast. The cast includes one other black actress. We had a long discussion one night about the fact that neither his character nor the woman's character, who often have whole shows built around their particular storylines, have had (and in his opinion, will ever have) storylines that include their personal lives to the extent the storylines about the white actors do. I had to think about it to realize he was right, but he is.

I keep thinking we, as a society, don't get enough credit for coming as far as we have in race relations in thirty or forty years, but then I think about how far we still have to go. Unfortunately, the sea change necessary doesn't happen overnight, or even in thirty or forty years.
