This is how it is for the nominations. Everybody can vote on the Best Picture nominations, but otherwise you only get to vote on the nominations for the field(s) you work in.

The *winners* in each category get voted on by the entire Academy. Consequently, in a lot of the specialized fields, the nomination can sometimes mean more than the win.
