Some people find extra motivation if they put aside the money they would ordinarily spend on cigarettes each day. I once heard of two guys who decided to use their natural competitiveness to help them quit: they both put this money weekly into a joint account, having agreed that the first person to take up smoking again would forfeit the entire amount to the other person. Naturally, the longer this deal went on, the more infuriating it would have been to give up and hand over the wealth. I believe they kept it up for many years and then agreed they'd both kicked the habit, whereupon they split the money and went out and bought Ferraris or something.
